10 tips for making a garage workshop that's a joy to use...

Dura have an extensive range of storage products and over 20 years of experience to deliver beautifully organised spaces that makes any task a breeze. So whether it’s for business, DIY or leisure we have the solution. So, to design the perfect workspace, consider the following options:

1. Create a compact workstation with a choice of storage options

A workspace doesn’t need to be huge if you build in flexibility from the start. Make use of high and low level cabinets to maximise your storage capacity on a smaller footprint. Combine cupboards with drawers so you have space for all size items in one area.

2. Use a mobile units for ‘dual-purpose’ storage and desk area

Using a mobile unit under a worksurface is an excellent way to maximise your space. When you start your task you can wheel out your tools to free up a desk to sit at, and when you’re finished it stows neatly back away!

3. Organise your drawers with dividers or foams

You wouldn’t pile all of your kitchen cutlery loose into a single drawer, so why treat your tools any differently? Subdivide your drawers with boxes or metal dividers, or for a really professional finish get customised tool control foam (see right).

4. Store power tools easily to hand on a dedicated wall

Free yourself from mutliple carry cases, with a ‘power tool wall’. Each power tool can be stored independently on hooks, with cables neatly stowed alongside. See our StorePanel™ system for further information.

5. Permanently mount vices and power tools to work surfaces

Avoid repeated ‘set-up’ for frequent heavy-duty tasks, by creating a dedicated area for a vice, lathe or grinder. These can be mounted directly to Dura cabinets and workbenches, with stainless steel or wooden tops for a robust work surface underneath.

6. Power at your finger tips

Avoid trailing cables and trip hazards with integrated plug points. The Dura system has been designed to incorporate these features seamlessly, with data communication points too if computer work is required.

7. Light your working area properly

Free up deskspace that would otherwise be occupied by angle-poise lamps with under-cabinet lighting. Controls for the general room lights can also be integrated into back panels.

8. Organise small components in mini bins on a louvre system

This system is commonly used in professional workshops, and you can see why. Avoid jars of “pick-n-mix” fixings with labeled mini boxes set easily to hand.

9. Integrate your home comforts

If you’re going to spend a significant amount of time at your new workstation, you’ll want to be comfortable. Integrated entertainment devices can provide relaxing background music, while a chiller unit will provide on-hand refreshments.

10. Pick a system that can expand with your needs

The beauty of choosing Dura is that it’s modular, so can expand to accommodate new requirements. We have customers that return to us often DECADES later, and are delighted to see that they can expand on what they already have... which off course is still functioning beautifully!
